What is a benchmark?

A benchmark is a reference point or standard that people use to measure another thing.

What is Benchmark in Surveying?

A benchmark, also known as a bench mark or survey benchmark in surveying, is a permanent marker or post at an established elevation that can be used to measure the elevation of other topographical points.

Tech benchmarks

There are many meanings of benchmark in computer and Internet technology. Here are some examples:

A set of conditions that a product or system must meet in order to be evaluated. Tech reviewers may test several devices or computers using the same applications, user interactions, and context. The benchmark is the overall context in which all products are being compared and measured.

A program that is specifically designed to measure an operating system or other application.

An established product that can be used to compare with other products.

A list of performance criteria that a product must meet.

Sometimes laboratory benchmarks do not reflect actual product usage. The benchmarks may not accurately measure computer performance.

However, benchmarks are still useful. Some companies offer benchmark programs to download or a benchmark testing service directly on their site.

What are Survey Benchmark Monument Locations and How Do They Work?

Survey benchmark monuments can be brass or metal discs that are embedded in the ground and provide latitude, longitude, or orthometric height.

Because they are part of a set, they provide a reference point for surveyors.

A few benchmarks can also be used as a reference for elevations. These benchmarks show the elevation above or below sea-level at that particular location.

A "benchmark" can be used to refer to a general term that may also be called survey marks, geodetic markers or control stations. Each one has a slightly different meaning.

Survey professionals prefer to use the terms station or marker rather than benchmark when describing horizontal control marks.

Triangulation is used to develop a Datum

A survey benchmark monument. Surveyors have been using markers in recent years to place a GPS receiver antenna at a predetermined position for differential GPS surveying.

Surveyors must consider the curvature and sea-level surfaces when mapping large areas. Geodesists created the North American geodetic survey network. They provide the basis for North America’s horizontal control data.

Surveyors have two benchmark locations. They use triangulation or trigonometry for measuring the distance and elevation between them. Geodetic leveling is a way to determine the Earth's area and volume.

The North American mapmakers, engineers, and land surveyors need to have a solid framework of horizontal control data. This data allows for better precision in surveys and helps to locate private, national, state and county boundaries with greater precision. Surveyors need to have benchmarks in order to accurately measure all land boundaries and modern infrastructure.

Who is responsible for Survey Benchmark Monuments

The United States' NOAA's National Geodetic Survey is responsible for approximately 240,000 stations that have been gathered over the past two centuries. This data is made available to the public through the National Geodetic Survey Data Explorer.

NGS created the North American Datum of 1927, which used the Clarke Spheroid of 1866 as a point of origin and Meade's Ranch. NGS then developed the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). This horizontal control datum is used by the United States, Canada and Mexico. It is based on the Geodetic Reference System 80 and a geocentric origin.

The maintenance of survey benchmarks is the responsibility of Natural Resources Canada's Geodetic Refer System.

The Ordnance Survey is responsible for maintaining benchmarks in the United Kingdom.

This service is provided by the Institut Geographique National in France.

What is benchmarking?

Benchmarking is a way for companies to evaluate their performance and that of others to draw useful conclusions about business practices. These are some of the most popular benchmarking methods that companies can use in order to inform their decisions, and measure their success.
